Wassail

5 Dec

I had never tried wassail until I met my in-laws. I love hot apple cider, and this is a step above that. My husband discovered that we had a bottle of rum in the pantry and he asked me if I would make some wassail. So, yesterday I asked my mother in law for her recipe.  I have never tried adding rum to the wassail, but my husband’s family seems to enjoy it. I made this on my stove top, but my mother in law says it can be made in the crockpot as well. She said she likes to serve it with sliced oranges studded with cloves floating in the bowl of wassail. I think this would look lovely for a Christmas party.

Wassail

Source: my mother in law

1 gallon apple cider

2 teaspoons whole cloves

2 teaspoons whole allspice

2-3 cinnamon sticks

2/3 cup sugar

red hot candy for color (optional)

Heat cider, cloves, allspice, cinnamon, sugar, and red hot candies if you are using them (I added a small handful) to a boil.  Reduce heat to low and cover. Simmer this for 20 minutes. Strain wassail after cooking and refrigerate if not serving immediately.
